Learner’s permit FAQ
National answers to the questions families ask most. For your state’s specific rules, open your state guide.
What is the youngest age you can get a learner’s permit in the US?
Age 14, in Alaska, Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, North Dakota, and South Dakota. Michigan follows closely at 14 years 8 months, and Idaho and Montana at 14½ with driver education. At the other end, states like New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Delaware, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and Rhode Island start at 16.
Can I drive in another state with my learner’s permit?
Sometimes — it depends on the state you’re driving in, not the one that issued your permit. Some states honor out-of-state permits if you meet their own minimum age and supervision rules; others don’t recognize them at all. Check the rules of every state you’ll drive through before a road trip.
Who can supervise a permit driver?
Every state requires a licensed adult in the front passenger seat, but the details differ: minimum supervisor ages are commonly 21 or 25, some states require the supervisor to be a parent, guardian, or driving instructor for some or all practice, and most require the supervisor to have held a full license for at least a year.
What happens if I get a ticket on my learner’s permit?
Consequences are usually stricter than for fully licensed drivers. Many states restart or extend your holding period, require violation-free time before the road test, or suspend the permit for serious offenses. A clean permit period is often a written requirement for moving to the next license stage.
Do I need driver education to get a permit?
It depends on the state. Some require enrollment before the permit (California, Illinois, Texas for minors), some require completion before the license, and some have no formal course requirement — though they usually compensate with more supervised practice hours.
How much does a learner’s permit cost?
Most states charge a modest application or testing fee, but amounts change frequently and some states bundle the permit fee with the eventual license fee. Check the current fee schedule on your state licensing agency’s website — each guide on this site links to the official page.
Can adults get a learner’s permit?
Yes. Every state issues permits to new drivers over 18, and the process is usually simpler: most graduated-licensing rules (holding periods, hour logs, night restrictions) apply only to minors, though a shorter holding period sometimes still applies to adults.
